Ring ribbons, jewellery sashes and chair bows carrying two names and one day — from the promise tray to the engagement table, for a family’s new chapter.

A ribbon is always there when the promise tray is laid or the engagement table is set: under the rings, over the jewellery, behind the chairs. Ours carry two names and the date of the day. From söz to nişan, pieces with the same two names belong together — and when the day is over, they stay in a drawer as the first keepsake of a new family.

Diş buğdayı: the Turkish first-tooth celebration, and a handful of wheat

In Anatolia a baby’s first tooth is celebrated with boiled wheat: neighbours are called, wheat is sprinkled over the baby’s head, and a row of objects is set out for them to reach for. At Muammer Esat’s diş buğdayı I found myself wondering where the custom comes from and what it still says to a mother today.
